For those who have always had an interest in becoming a commercial pilot, now may be your chance to finally pursue your dreams and attend aviation school. That’s because under new regulations, commercial pilots who have reached the age of 60 will be mandated to retire in 2013, which means there will be a huge demand for young and bright pilots really soon. To help point you in the right direction, below we’ve listed some of the top aviation schools in the country.

Daytona Beach’s Embry Riddle Aeronautical University

Established 22 years after the Wright brothers’ first flight, Embry-Riddle is now nicknamed “Harvard in the Sky”—perhaps because it has some of the highest employment success rates among alumni. In fact, the school boasts that major airlines “hire more Embry-Riddle alumni than from any other collegiate aviation program” in the U.S. While Embry-Riddle has an exceptional Aeronautical Science program to become a commercial pilot, it has other programs designed to teach students about research, operation, and aviation maintenance too such as Aviation Maintenance Science, Air Traffic Management, and Accelerated Aerospace Engineering just to name a few. The school also offers some online courses. Although Embry-Riddle is one of the best, it’s also one of the most expensive to attend. So make sure you can afford tuition and housing.

ATP Flight School

ATP has branches all around the country—26 to be exact which are equally sprinkled from the east to the west coast. While there is a specific Airline Career Pilot program, the school works under a “total-immersion” flight training module which ultimately means you get a better bang- for-your buck because you get to learn a variety of flight skills—not just the ones that pertain to your specific career route. This can make you more versatile and thus increase your chances of employment. ATP also offers online courses through Mountain State University and Utah Valley University.

University of North Dakota

Last but certainly not least, UND has also has one of the best aviation departments in the country—and since students are required to fulfill a liberal arts component in order to move on to their advanced all-season flight training, flight students get to be a more well-rounded student and get to have the whole “college-experience” a little bit more. UND is also has some the best state-of-the art equipment, aircraft, and flight simulators.
