WiFi in-flight is becoming a popular add-on for airlines with AirTran recently joining the ranks of carriers to provide internet service onboard its flights. Carriers already offering the service include Southwest, JetBlue, and Virgin America. US Airways, Delta and American Airlines have started the installation of WiFi on their fleet with completion expected in 2010.

CEO of AirTran Airways, Bob Fornaro said “Promise made, promise delivered. When you get onboard an AirTran Airways jet, you know exactly what you’re going to get — an assigned seat on a full-sized, new Boeing jet with Business Class, a friendly crew, complimentary XM Satellite Radio and now Wi-Fi. It’s that consistent, low-cost, high-quality experience that sets us apart from our competitors.”

Cost, technology and passengers’ willingness to pay for the service are just some of the issues that carriers have to deal with as major airlines have to scrounge for every dollar now that passenger count has dropped amid the economic downturn.

If you can’t seem to find a WiFi signal in a cab, try going up to 35,000 feet.

Good day, Wayne you know what is amazing about this development is that over the past 20 years airlines have tried to pass the message to the traveling public that the use of electronic equipment and devices are harmful to the aircraft in flight. I always knew that was totally nonsense, due to the fact that millions of people have disobeyed such warnings and notices given by the thousands of flight attendants with no record of accidents or incidents occurring.

Now, here we are reading that you’ll be allowed to use your iPhone, Blackberry and Laptop in flight with the enjoyment of Wi-Fi. Great!

Thanks to the ever progressing world of technology.
